Q&A with Sebastian Nemeth
CEO / Co-founder @ Portyr
What are your plans for the future?
We've finally found a voice with our take on GDPR and we're going to run with it. I'm really excited by how well the market has responded to our human-centered message. As we solidify our service, we'll take it to the rest of the EU, and hopefully turn some heads. Pretty soon, we also want to take a company work trip to the Alps in Austria.
Why did you become an entrepreneur?
I believe the sole purpose of entrepreneurship is the independent pursuit of meaning and creativity. It's an opportunity to design our lives, in the face of a world that is changing faster than we can follow. I practice entrepreneurship to design my life for happiness.
Aside from achieving commercial success, what do you see as your startup’s mission?
Our message is that General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is all about the individual and their data. Our mission is to get companies to focus on this aspect, instead of their own internal concerns, and realize the benefits this approach brings. Ultimately, we want to shepherd in the new digital economy that GDPR promises in the future.
Describe your perfect day at work.
Arriving at work just slightly before the others do, I head to Starter for a delicious cappuccino. As I settle into my seat, with the warm mug in hand, Maija, our UX specialist approaches and we delve deep over the latest designs, planning a workshop to understand the user's mental model. A few hours later, we snap out of it victorious, and move on to the next important item: lunch! In the afternoon, there's a few hours to prototype our UX ideas, so I head to a cafe or a private area to focus and get them ready for our UX workshop tomorrow. I fade out to code land. A few hours later, a message rings out over Slack, "Beer o'clock @ Favela".
What is your best advice for entrepreneurs who are just starting out?
You don't need to be a 'great entrepreneur'. Be yourself and do business for your own happiness, not somebody else's. Don't get caught up in the startup hype. Take your time, learn, be reasoned and never be in so much of a rush that you're no longer enjoying the experience.
