Engineering Director

Salary Competitive

Umbra empowers 3D graphics designers and engineers to create, optimize, share and view their designs in real-time on virtually any device. As the established gaming industry standard in graphics optimization for more than a decade, Umbra is now redefining rapid visualization for all industry ecosystems utilizing complex 3D models.

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Director to join our ranks at our HQ in Helsinki.

Here at Umbra we work with the very foundations of real-time 3D graphics, the representation of the geometry itself, and are building a set of tools that enable displaying arbitrarily large 3D data sets on any platform. The processing of these huge models is performed using our distributed computation architecture, automatically scaling up to as many instances as desired. Already today, our product handles multi-terabyte point clouds as input and renders them 60 frames per second on smartphones (e.g. iPhone 6S) and modern web browsers.

As an Engineering Director, you will be managing our seasoned and ultra-talented team of 15 developers. You report directly to the CEO and work together with product management to define what the team is building at any given time. We expect you to be an experienced people manager, but you will also need to be prepared to occasionally roll up your sleeves and put in some light programming, for example by fixing bugs, improving the build system or writing critical tests, to help the team to succeed.

Your responsibilities are

  • To define the deliverables of the engineering team in collaboration with other management and the CEO
  • To empower the engineering team to operate efficiently, to deliver what is expected and to constantly improve both individually and as a team
  • Building the team - both defining the roles that are required and active participation in the recruitment process

Requirements for the position

  • At least 5 years prior experience as a programmer
  • Proven experience in managing a software development team

Preferred qualifications

  • Domain expertise in one of our core fields: backend (AWS, Scala), 3D graphics, C++

General requirements to all positions at Umbra

  • Being able to take initiative and to make things happen
  • Proactive can-do attitude and team player spirit
  • Passion for video games is a plus
  • Good command of English, both written and spoken
